Pilates
is named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967). He was
a boxer, gymnast and skilled diver who also studied yoga and Zen
meditation. The Pilates method includes more than 500 controlled,
precise movements, designed to stretch and strengthen muscles without
adding bulk.
Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the
body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine.
Pilates teaches awareness of breath and alignment of the spine,
and strengthens the abdominals and lower back musculature.
The exercises are performed on
a mat or with unique apparatus such as the Reformer, Chairs, Cadillac,
Barrels, Ped-o-Pul, and Magic Circle.
Joe began his inventions by rigging springs to hospital beds, enabling
bedridden patients to exercise against resistance!
